Ever increasing traffic jams, pollution, soaring oil and parking prices are all pushing many of us to rethink our transportation habits. According to a study published by the University Observatory of Mobility, 10% of Geneva residents will use electric bicycles (E-Bikes) by 2030.

What are the challenges linked to the development of an efficient and environmentally friendly development of E-Bikes? Which infrastructures and what type of recharging stations do we need to set up?

Whereas a network of conventional bikes stations is about to be built in Geneva, on September 19, 2013, the Geneva Creativity Center (GCC) set up a meeting which brought together managers of mobility in the public and private sectors, experts from the University and engineers for a « sporty – think-tanky – cozy » event, to think about the way forward to make our transportation more sustainable. The event started with an E-Bike tour around the city and the countryside, and continued with a series of conferences and brainstormings. It finished with a cocktail, as to refuel bodies and minds, and foster exchange among the participants.

Sessions dealt with urban planning, funding schemes, logistics (charging stations, management and safety), and battery technologies. A list of the most interesting ideas that emerged during the event has been distributed to the participants. Follow-up activities are in progress.
